BECAUSE pets are family, and we owe it to them to protect them

TO YOU, THEY’RE YOUR FAMILY…

Most states protect animals from cruelty — unless that harm happens at the vet. Legally, your pet is treated as property - like a lamp or a very old used car. That means even in cases of malpractice, negligence, or abuse, veterinary accountability is very limited.

And unlike human healthcare, veterinary hospitals don’t have many (if any) consistent standards of care mandated by law. So when your pet is taken “to the back,” there’s almost nothing in place to protect them from harm, unnecessary procedures, or improper care.

Pet Parents 4 Change wants to change that - with your help. Sign up for our email list to join the pack and protect your pet.

State laws consider your pet a piece of property - like a car or a lamp. Regulations are limited, and corporations and private equity now own almost 50% of all vet hospitals in the US. Join our email list and learn the micro-actions you can take to create change.

ABOUT Pet Parents for Change

We believe that pets are members of the family, and that every state should recognize them as more than a piece of property.

We believe that your pet deserves quality healthcare.

We believe every pet parent has a right to know who benefits from their pet’s illness.

We believe that every pet parent has the right to know when interns and trainees are learning on the job - and on their pet. It’s called informed consent - it’s required in human healthcare and we as humans expect a similar standard for our pets and family members.

And we believe that together, we can create change.

our story

In September 2023, Mr. Mister was admitted through the ER of VCA Animal Specialty Group in Glendale, California for dehydration and elevated kidney values.

During his stay, neurological and breathing complications arose. At that time, we were informed that the veterinarian managing his case needed approval from their supervisor to administer his prescribed medication. Their supervisor was not at the hospital and we were told that the supervisor was unreachable, and therefore our agreed-upon treatment plan, would not be followed.

The following day, I noticed his cone was tied so tightly that it was restricting his breathing. Once it was untied, his breathing immediately improved. His records show he had been breathing orthopneically two hours prior -something I witnessed as well- which is an objectively recognized sign of respiratory distress. In a court filing, VCA stated that “a reasonable man would not endure emotional distress that would amount to severe or serious emotional distress, especially when the tightness of the e-collar can be adjusted.”
